You’re not too old
it’s never too late
Hi, I’m Dr Kaye, and in case you’re wondering, I have a doctorate in philosophy. According to google, philosophers are funny, thoughtful, insightful, and some of the most interesting people you’ll ever meet. Cool, eh?
I’m now in my mid-seventies and aware I’ve lived more years than I have left. I don’t find that daunting; my life has been blessed AND heartbreaking. But it’s a reminder to show up each day and live intentionally.
When I turned 70, I completed my first feature-length documentary. Catherine’s Kindergarten is a moving tribute to my daughter and a labor of love. It was a huge undertaking, and not surprisingly, I fell into a hole afterwards. I felt emotionally drained and lost, like a ship drifting without a rudder.
I’ve always had a creative project to work on that gave me meaning but I knew, at this stage of my life, I didn’t have the energy or commitment for something big. That’s when I decided to use my new skills of telling stories though pictures, filming my day to day activities, like keeping a journal, and posting on Instagram.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine what a journey I was embarking on. I’m thankful to each one of you for supporting me as I stumble my way into learning a bunch of new technical skills. It’s been enjoyable, scary, challenging and rewarding. All at the same time.
As a lifelong activist, I’m grateful to have a platform to speak out against agism, and together, we can change the narrative about growing old by spreading these three key messages that underpin ageing disgracefully.
