RETREAT

SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA

With Dr. Kaye Cleave

THE JOURNEY

Whether you’re entering the uncharted waters of menopause, grappling with an empty nest, or navigating the vast ocean that’s the final act of your life, a journey of self discovery will open doors to self transformation, helping you heal old wounds and regrets, and developing a clearer picture of your passions, aspirations, and purpose in life. You’ll be asked to dive deep into your soul, reflecting on past experiences and examining your thoughts, feelings, actions, beliefs and habits. You’ll take an honest look at what is holding you back and what needs to change. This can be scary and you’ll need a generous dose of self compassion and forgiveness. As you continue on the journey, you’ll gain wisdom and confidence to embrace new skills needed to move forward. And when you feel lost or disconnected, remember it’s preferable than fumbling through life, unsure of who you are or what you want and being afraid of everything.

WHY CAMBODIA?

Often called the 'Kingdom of Wonder,' Cambodia is a beautiful country that’s safe for women traveling alone. My friend calls it her happy place. Cambodian people are kind, generous, and friendly, despite enduring horrific mass murders under the Pol Pot regime which wiped out almost 25% of the country’s population. Siem Reap is in the heart of Cambodia and has a rich spiritual history of Angkor Wat, the massive temple complex consisting of millennium-old ruins. It is the largest religious site in the world and the temples are still alive with the wisdom of the past, making Siem Reap an ideal place for a personal retreat of self discovery.

DR. KAYE

What should you know about me? I’m almost 75 and I passionately believe it’s never too late to follow your dreams. In my fifties, I received a doctorate in philosophy; in my sixties, I wrote my first children’s picture book to fund a school in a remote Nepalese village in honor of my daughter; in my seventies, I released my first feature-length film—Catherine’s Kindergarten—which has won multiple awards and screened world-wide. Over my lifetime, I’ve had various roles and careers such as academic, gymnast, meditator, dancer, teacher, and published author. My first book—Once More With Feeling—has sold in numerous countries and my chapbook of poems —Cartwheels of Love and Loss—was the alternate winner in the Minerva Rising Press Dare to Speak contest. For two years, I was a research scholar at UC Berkeley, studying the correlation between grief and mindfulness. Currently I co-lead Grief & Healing Retreats at Laguna Writers in San Francisco.

FINAL THOUGHTS

All retreat activities that require your attendance occur in the morning. Because of the intense heat, you may wish to spend the afternoons enjoying free time. There are optional afternoon excursions that can be arranged by the resort such as an extra trip to Angkor Wat, Kulen Elephant Sanctuary, or Apopo Rat Rescue. There’s also an opportunity to volunteer at Feeding Dreams, Cambodia, the community school which I’m involved with. (NOTE: The cost of these extra excursions are not covered in the retreat package.)

CAVEAT: Cambodia is incredibly hot in June, and although your accommodation is air-conditioned, the heat will drain you. If you have any doubts about your health, please consult with your doctor. (You may wish to arrive a few days before the retreat to acclimate or stay afterwards to extend your Cambodian experience.)
